Studies on Bulb and Clove Characteristics of Korean Local Garlic Strains

Abstract
In order to obtain informations on selections of seed garlic, storage and marketing improvement, and on the characteristics of bulb and clove the present study was conducted with Korean local strains which have been kept since 1963 at college of Agriculture, Kyungpook National University and collected in 1973.
1. Bulb shape shows more flat appearance in the southern than in northern strains. The same tendency was shown in clove shape.
2. The number of primary cloves per bulb ranged 4.8-9.0 as an average in the strains kept since 1963. It was averaging 5.5-13.6 for the strains collected in 1973. And the most of strains had less than 10 in number of primary cloves. In the same strain, the larger bulb had the more primary cloves.
3. The cloves were born in two successive layers. The strains kept since 1963 had heavier clove in the out-layer than that of inner-layer for the southern and northern strains. However, clove weight was heavier in inner-layer than that of out-layer with southern strains collected in 1973, while it was reversed case with northern strains.
4. In most of strains, the total cloves per bulb was more than primary cloves. It was postulated that the above results show relationship to the secondary growth. Higher rate in number of total cloves/number of primary cloves was brought about by the result of vigrous secondary growth.
5. In distribution rate of different clove weight per bulb, the middle class was most. The larger bulb had the larger cloves. Strains and bulbs with vigrous secondary growth increased number of the smaller cloves.
